Shannopin’s story began in 1919 when avid golfers D.H. Roelofs, R.H. Houston, and J.L. McBride, set out to establish their own private golf club. They purchased the former Jackman Farm and surrounding land for what would officially become Shannopin Country Club in September 1920.

The club was named in honor of Chief Shannopin of the Lenape tribe, who once lived along the southern banks of the Allegheny River, and was known for his efforts to preserve the land of Western Pennsylvania.

Shannopin’s course was designed by renowned architect Emil Loeffler, former superintendent of Oakmont Country Club — a legacy that continues to define the club's experience more than a century later.
